COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Rule of the thumb in rehabilitation is,” the ultimate is community re-integration “.The autism organization cannot achieve any fruitful results without the outreach program. There is need to transfer rehabilitation and supportive skills to parents and relatives at home so as to ensure continuity of the program. The outreach program also helps in understanding different challenges faced by children and relatives of children living with autism spectrum disorders. It is through outreach program that the organization can advocate for people with autism spectrum disorders.

PRE-SCHOOL AND EARLY STIMULATION PROGRAM

For children born with autism spectrum disorders, it is evident from very few months of life. These children lack eye contact as well as a lack of bonding with the mother. Already the triad of impairments that is identified with autism is evident. The organization upholds an early stimulation mandate. It is the objective of the organization to provide early stimulation to all children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Stimulation involves use of the environment, nutrition, play group and therapy services. Pre-school and early stimulation are the core for any stimulation program for children with autism spectrum disorders. This program is informed by the objective that emphasizes individualised stimulation programs.

SOCIAL SERVICES AND COUNSELING

The organization looks after a child/person with autism spectrum disorders within their support system framework. It is our responsibility to ensure proper placement within the community for education, training and counseling. The caregivers, siblings and peers will benefit from the counseling services that we offer as an organization. We have a support group for parents/caregivers of children/people with autism spectrum disorders where they receive information and can share and advice each other on their varied experiences

REHABILITATION

Children with autism spectrum disorders usually attain their physical milestones early but in their development, they have developmental delay in speech and language acquisition, social interaction and imagination. In addition roughly 75% have learning difficulties. Therapeutic rehabilitation modalities are aimed at unlocking children who are trapped in hate and rage. Children with autism spectrum disorders are described to be in a shell meaning, they are hiding or they are switching off from what is around them. They appear to ignore and not want to be involved. With poor interaction, they do not learn new things and eventually they are classified as having learning difficulties. Therapy modalities from the services of the following, occupational therapist, speech and language specialist etc help in the management of children with autism spectrum disorders.
