Our Projects
Life on our farm in Ruwa is about more than care; it also helps sustain our work. We keep cattle and chickens and tend a vegetable garden, which put food on the table for the children in our care and generate revenue to support our programmes. These projects also give the children a calm, hands-on environment to learn, play and grow, and every purchase or contribution helps us keep this work going.
Our Garden
Our vegetable garden is one of the heart-warming parts of life on the farm. It supplies fresh, nutritious vegetables for the children’s meals, and any surplus is sold to help fund our programmes.
The garden is also a classroom without walls. Working alongside our carers, the children learn practical life skills such as planting, watering, weeding and harvesting. Tending the soil builds patience, routine and responsibility, while time outdoors in a calm, natural setting supports their wellbeing and helps them feel part of something they have grown themselves.
Our Chickens
Chicken farming is one of our most important income-generating projects. We keep Road Runner chickens, a hardy local breed, for egg production, and we also breed and raise Australorps, a well-known, high-quality breed. We sell our chickens, and every sale helps pay for the food, care and programmes the children depend on.
Like the rest of the farm, the chicken run is also a learning space, where the children can spend time around the animals in a calm, hands-on setting.
Our Cattle
Cattle farming is another important part of life on our farm. Our herd helps put food on the table for the children in our care and generates revenue to support our programmes. Cattle also form part of the calm, natural setting that is central to our work, where interacting with the animals helps children feel at ease, reduces loneliness and encourages social interaction.
Future Projects
We have big plans for the farm. We would like to start fish farming and set up greenhouses to grow high-value crops such as bell peppers and cucumbers. These new projects would give us more reliable ways to raise funds, provide even more fresh, nutritious food for the children, and create new opportunities for them to learn practical skills.
To bring these plans to life, we would greatly appreciate your help. Whether through funding, equipment, materials, expertise or training, every contribution will help us grow our income and secure a stronger future for the children in our care. If you or your organisation would like to partner with us on any of these projects, please get in touch.
